Se vi è piaciuto DSL potete installarlo sull'hard disk. Dato che le applicazioni sono leggere, è un sistema indicato per hardware datato.
I requisiti di sistema sono veramente bassi: per poter essere avviata Damn Small Linux richiede appena un processore 486 con 16 MB di RAM, hardware cioè di oltre 10 anni fa. Il limite è quindi quello di un PC con lettore CD o controller USB. Il software contenuto è certamente molto interessante: in soli 50 MB di immagine sono presenti programmi per tutti gli usi. In particolare è presente un window manager pienamente funzionante, FluxBox, molto leggero e veloce.
Si tratta di un fork di Blackbox, al quale sono state aggiunte alcune funzionalità molto interessanti. Personalmente lo uso molto spesso anche perché è estremamente intuitivo e in grado di offrire un ambiente gradevole usando risorse molto limitate.
È presente anche Mozilla Firefox e questo consente una navigazione ottimale in pieno rispetto degli standard. Questo browser però non è pensato per poter essere eseguito su computer di qualche anno fa: per questo è incluso Dillo, un browser estremamente leggero e veloce.
È presente anche un ottimo client di posta, Sylpheed, anche questo molto leggero, ma con una serie impressionante di funzionalità. Completano questa distribuzione mc, Midnight Commander, il filemanager per console più utilizzato dagli utenti Linux, Siag, un foglio di calcolo, FLWriter, un word processor minimale (offre anche la possibilità di vedere file di Microsoft Word), xmms, il noto lettore di file multimediali, clone del famoso Winamp. Sono presenti anche dei giochi, applicazioni per la grafica, un visualizzatore di file PDF e utility per la masterizzazione.
Un'altra caratteristica estremamente interessante è la possibilità di gestire ogni aspetto della distribuzione attraverso una comodissima (e semplicissima) interfaccia.

vedo che la 4.4 non ha il supporto PCMCIA.
